Index-card or Leitner Method

The index-card method, also called Leitner method is based on a principle which inlcudes forgetting and repeating in a manner, that questions which the brain easily remembers will be repeated less often than questions which are a bit tricky to remember.

The subject to learn needs to be prepared as question and answer couples, each on one side of the index card. Each index card represents one question. Boxes are needed for storing the index cards, a rubber band will do the same.

Steps Do you know the answer? Further proceeding
start with your bundle of index cards (box 1) yes - card moves to box 2
no  - card stays in box 1
work with box 1 until box 2 is sufficiently filled
refill box 1 with new questions
working with box 2 yes - card moves to box 3
no  - card moves to box 1
start working with a new box only if it is sufficiently filled
refill other boxes by going through lower numbered boxes
working with box 3 yes - card moves to box 4
no - card moves to box 1
working with box 4 yes - card moves to box 5
no - card moves to box 1
working with box 5 yes - card moves out
no - card moves to box 1

While learning and moving the cards around, time will have passed until you encounter the same question again. If you do not know the answer anymore, the card moves back to the very beginning - box 1! Thus repeating the questions you keep forgetting much more often.

Learned properly and not cheating yourself, you will have the answer in your long term memory after the respective index card leaves box 5.
